Every Blackness Has a Silver Lining

Depression is such a debilitating mental health condition, it can literally penetrate every cell of your being, bring on immobility in both body and spirit, hopelessness and a constant chain of negative thoughts.

People who struggle with depression, seem to be struggling with life itself, most of it seems meaningless as they see no way out of their suffering. However, some find that depression also brings on more compassion, understanding and even creativity in their life as they try to find a “silver lining ” in the whole experience.

Below are some quotes and poetry of those who “shake hands” with depression on a regular basis yet were able to transcend the seemingly bleak emotional side of this mental illness and find meaning and beauty in their existence.

“If depression is creeping up and must be faced, learn something about the nature of the beast: You may escape without a mauling.” – Dr. R. W. Shepherd

“Depression is a prison where you are both the suffering prisoner and the cruel jailer.” – Dorathy Rowe

“That’s the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it’s impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage without a key.” – Elizabeth Wurtzel

“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” – Lao Tzu

Blackness

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is strange with its twist and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out,
So don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed you just never know.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
And the darkness hovers and weighs on him,
He cannot see in the light so dim,
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to world renown.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
How close you are you can never tell,
When the blackness has cast it’s ugly spell,
So stick to the fight when hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
